About 155 educational institutions across Vietnam trained more than 45,000 foreign students from 102 countries and territories from 2016 to 2021. Of the total, 26.6% were sent to Vietnam under student exchange and cooperation agreements between Vietnam and other countries, the Ministry of Education and Training reported.

Some 4,000-6,000 foreign students are admitted to Vietnamese educational institutions every year. The highest number was reported in 2019, reaching 6,300. The figure dropped to just around 3,000 in 2020 and 2021 due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most of them either studied at universities or chose short-term courses, while a quite modest number chose post-graduate and Ph.D. ones. Nearly 80% of the students were from Laos and Cambodia. But as a result of growing relations with the Republic of Korea, China, France and Japan, the number of students from these countries in Vietnam is on a rise.

The Hanoi-based Vietnam National University (VNU) Hanoi attracted the largest foreign enrollment, with more than 1,000 from 74 countries and territories. It is followed by the Vietnam National University  Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi University, Hue University, Thai Nguyen University, and Da Nang University.

The report also indicates that the majority of foreign students are satisfied with the living conditions, learning facilities, and lecturers’ care.

Speaking at a recent conference on the training and management of foreign students in Vietnam, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc urged Vietnamese universities to improve the quality of their programs and beef up international cooperation to attract more foreign students, VietnamPlus said.

Vietnamese universities gain higher world rankings

The Vietnam National University – Hanoi ranked 758th in the latest Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, jumping 186 places from the previous list released in January.

With the new position, the Vietnam National University stood 183rd in Asia and 14th in Southeast Asia, according to the rankings issued by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council on August 7.

The Webometrics list, published twice a year, assesses the digitalization capacity and impact of higher education institutions’ academic resources based on the volume of the website content, the visibility and impact of their website publications, the openness of academic resources on Google Scholar, and the number of citations they received on the Scopus database.

THE also released THE Impact Rankings, which assess universities’ performance on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. In the latest list, the Vietnam National University was also present together with some other educational institutions in Vietnam, including the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ton Duc Thang University, Phenikaa University, Duy Tan University, FPT University, and National Economics University.

The University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), a Turkish non-profit organization, has also honored 17 Vietnamese universities for their outstanding academic performance globally in 2022, according to Nhan dan (People) newspaper.

Notably, Duy Tan and Ton Duc Thang universities were named in the top 500 globally.

The URAP ranking system focuses on academic quality. The group gathered data from about 3,000 higher education institutes (HEI), covering approximately 12% of all HEIs globally. From the 3,000-plus universities and learning institutions assessed, the ranking is derived based on multiple criteria focusing on academic performance.

The overall score of each HEI is based on its performance over several indicators, including current scientific productivity, research impact, research quality, and international acceptance.

Three Vietnamese universities have been named among the top 1000 in the latest World University Rankings 2023 released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British firm specializing in overseas education. Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City along with its sister institution in Hanoi entered the 801 to 1000 band of the 2023 ranking. This year also witnessed the emergence of Duy Tan University in Da Nang in the 801 to 1000 group for the first time.
